There's nothing wrong about it. Some people just had a set headcanon that involved him not having wings, so now that the show broke it, they're pissed and pretend this is bad development, because its not the development they wanted.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with them showing Spike is slowly growing up, and letting him take a small step into maturity without changing anything else about his character. They handlded it perfectly as well, making it relevant but also lowkey because its not supposed to be a huge change, but rather him just reaching puberty.
The only problem here are the people who think not having wings was the only thing making Spike unique.
If that's all they could see about his character, then they didn't appreciate his character in the first place, so no big loss.
