It pretty much already is sadly for over a decade, with only a few occasionally ignored 2D movies. It doesn't help regardless of their quality they get ignored, while movies like the "Emoji Movie" get 4-and-a-half stars on Netflix, and such. Even mediocre CGI movies get more attention, as long as they have the same meta self-aware humor every CGI animated movie has had in the past 20 years.


 
Heck, one critic called "Curious George" outdated, because it used 2D animation for the characters, (I guess all the CGI backgrounds weren't enough...) despite actually being a decent cute & funny family movie.
 
The closest one was to being successful, was "Princess and the Frog," but even it seems forgotten lately.


 
Don Bluth apparently wants to have his upcoming "Dragon's Lair" movie be 2D. I hope it gets finished, and I hope it does well.
