I guess with the huge abundance of 'shipping/romance fanart on this site, it's easy to forget that, and automatically assume something is 'shippy. I actually agree, it'd be nice to see more cute platonic stuff.


 
Gender isn't even it, even if two characters are together, and are the same gender, people assume they're a romantic pairing. (Seeing how popular yuri is in the brony fanbase.) That's ironically how LyraBon got so popular, and became an OTP. (To the point, it feels like we're not allowed to portray them as platonic friends anymore, nor 'ship them with any other characters, lest we trigger some fans). Which I think is kinda unfair honestly.)  
Even the show kinda regards/references it now. (Though, is a bit more ambiguous about it.)
