Yeah, but to a lot of people, the logic is that you're_*equating_* being unlikable or bad with being gay, hence using terms like "gay" or "faggot" as generic insults. Even if that's not your intent, that is the implication that comes across, intended or otherwise.
Like, follow me here. If you don't see being gay as a bad thing (and I believe you don't), then it doesn't make sense to use "gay" (or "fag" or "queer", etc.) as generic insults for being unlikable, stupid, or lame.
