No, that pain relieves stress is something that is extremely well documented. It's where the saying "slapping sense into someone" comes from. If someone is stressing out, slapping them will snap them out of it and causes them to relax. The jolt of pain focuses the brain.


 
With long term stress pain also works very well. That's why people suffering from overstress often do self-mutilation. It's usually when they are so overstressed that they can no longer get into things that normally relax them. Only severe pain is enough to get through to them and get them to relax.
