Racism has been a topic of the show since Season 1 with Zecora.
And the theme of unification of different cultures has been around since Season 2 with Hearth's Warming Eve. And the Dragon Quest episode showed the status quo of a species without any friendship.
In Season 4 finale, Twilight realizes her goal was to spread Friendship to others.
Season 5 and 6, Griffons, dragons and changelings get a taste of friendship. And the status quo for dragons changed somewhat to be more under friendships influence howeber incomplete.
So basically this theme of harmony between others has been around since the beginning, and the Seasons 8 and 9 seasons are the final culmination of that goal that all creatures would live virtuously and live harmoniously with each other.
That's why I love the School of Friendship it's the culmination of the theme of friendship.
