It does seem ironic, but legendary salamanders do take a reptilian shape as do dragons. That, and the name is based on an Arabic term that translates to "lives in fire". Also the main reason why people associated salamanders with fire, in case you really must know, is because they tend to hibernate either inside or in between logs. Hence, people would accidentally disturb their sleep by starting fires.
