I'm not sure if I or anyone can communicate with you properly until you can come to terms with this simple idea.


 
Harsh =/= 1000+ years. Principles have a breaking point. There's broad strokes between harsh punishment, and completely unyielding punishment. If someone tortured you or me via normal torture or some form of isolation for 1000 years, you'd be an entirely different person by the end of it. I say "+" because Celestia was surprised Discord was able to escape. Ergo, she had no intention of EVER freeing Discord before planning her retirement via grooming Twilight, presumably pre S1.
