Not really, aspects of the comic being canonical to the series pertain to how well they mesh with the Canon of the show. Case in point, King Sombra's backstory and the Mirrorverse Arc, both of which are non-canon.

And his actions after he broke free further prove that, since he had every intention of making Equestria his chaotic Empire forever regardless of his girlfriendnd being there or not.
