Long story short is that it is an urban myth, probably stemmed from similar yet unrelated circumstances that happened in arcades at the time. Supposedly, it was an arcade machine that was used by intelligence agencies as a means of brainwashing or mind-controlling the players who used it, most of whom got sick or even died whilst playing it.
