I seem to recall, new characters were also constantly introduced in the earlier seasons too. Heck, people had a cow over Season 2's reveal that Twilight has a sibling. So that's nothing new, and not every character needs to be super-developed to be interesting. (In fact, I kinda like them leaving some things up to the viewer's/fan's to interpret themselves.)
