If we get technical, Alicorns have also never been stated to be immortal. That was just an assumption by the fanbase.
 
All we know is that they have very long lives _*(Celestia is slightly over 1,000 years old)_*, but we know the same thing about Dragons _*(100 years is just a "nap")_*.


 
So for all we know, both races could simply be very long-lived, but with similar overall lifespans.
