I have a feeling they'll just stick with using the classic era characters for the later sequels, (Ex: just Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman, Metal Sonic & maybe Amy) judging by how super popular & well knownreceived the classic 2D games are compared to the 3D Sonic games, especially with Mania's recent popularity & success.
