What did they do in The Summer Sun Setback that was worthy of much sympathy,_*other_* than Tirek catching a bird?
They were still basically complete assholes aside of that bait-and-switch (that they willfully denied) in Frenemies, an episode which also made it clear in no uncertain terms that they wanted to painfully kill their enemies, and they still screwed over Rusty Bucket for kicks. It also kinda still played up Chrysalis'"[fear factor.":](/images/2047979

I don't think that scenes like that were framed to garner much sympathy, with how they were taking pleasure in the chaos they wrought, and how they suddenly appeared in a flash of lightning.
If you think about it, they never so much as **once** did anything "nice" for any_*person_* not in their group of three, that didn't have ulterior motives (and that possibly applies to them interacting amongst themselves as well on a general level, like say, playing a game of chess together, Cozy and Tirek), in the entirety of S9, and they still enjoyed screwing others over, causing trouble.

> **Cozy Glow**: You knew you couldn't stay that buff. You had to return all the life force to those Earth ponies so Grogar doesn't suspect anything.
> **Lord Tirek**: I don't have to like it.[/bq]
Now, that being said, their entertainment value was high when they were all playing off one another, in the episodes, but that isn't equivalent to "sympathetic overall."
