Well, they're not too far off. Griffons in most of the myths and legends are often illustrated as massive predatory beasts. Even in classic fantasy novels and roleplaying games. They're depicted as much larger than your average size horse.
So if they're bigger than a horse than they can easily dwarfed over normal size ponies.
