I really did feel for him this episode, and he's since become my favorite of the redeemed antagonists. He shouldn't have kept it secret, obviously, but his feeling inadequate and his being spurned by those he thought were his friends really resonated with me.
And in the third panel (and in the episode) he is clearly trying to say something, but the Pillars would have none of it.
