With respect, I think that that is a superficial idea on girliness and tomboyishness.
I think AJ's a girly tomboy because even though she does a lot of boyish things, at her core she's a motherly nurturer similar to Fluttershy who is also more sensitive and communal whereas Rainbow Dash is more agressive, more individualistic, less sensitive.
In fact in some ways, AJ could be more girly than Rarity. Because Rarity is a person who seeks after opportunity and ambition often in an agressive manner but AJ is more content to be in her own home and to help with her family.
This is why I like AJ and Fluttershy as friends. Because AJ could teach more inexperienced Fluttershy how to be a more firm motherly fellow. AJ and Fluttershy are more of the nurturers. Rarity and Rainbow Dash are the pursuers.
I think the idea of AJ as being a motherly nurturing tomboy is unique.
