That takes me back. Starbutterfly lore is about Mewmans immigrating to a land originally inhabited by "monsters." The Mewmans were the "colonizers" while the "monsters" were the natives. The Mewmans abused their magic to oppress the monsters and conquered Mewni. So to attone, Star severed the mewman's connection to magic so they can live peacefully with the monsters.
My theory on why ponies lost their magic was because they kept using it to hurt each other. So it was taken away from them. There's no big bad that they can blame for all the problems of their world and all they need to do is friendship laser to solve everything like g4 did. No. The ponies themselves caused it and they have to work hard with each other to make themselves better ponies for each other.
