But magic explicitly didn't exist at the time, so that stock rational doesn't work. That and the noted extra effort they did to avoid this is why this otherwise nitpick is an issue.

Is it the fault of fans for having and maintaining unrealistic expectations for the series? Or the show for encouraging and pandering off those expectations?

FIM became as popular as it was because it took itself seriously enough that it was conducive to those expectations of realism. Starlight's redemption is when it reached the limit of what it could successfully convey to that standard and the show has been divisive since. The Transformers crossover was well received because it started out by saying it wasn't meant to be taken seriously canon-wise, so it is possible for the work to adjust fan expectations to match what it's doing.
