Not true. Every single film "[on this list":](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_animated_films) is CG. And a lot of older 2D-animated films are surprisingly cheap when adjusted for inflation. (For instance, The Secret of NIMH is only about $18 million.)

I think part of the reason TPatF wasn't a huge hit (along with competition from James Cameron's Avatar) was because it was marketed as a typical princess film, unlike Tangled and Frozen, which were marketed as comedies. (I was 14 when TPatF was released, and I avoided it because I thought it looked lame and girly thanks to the Disney Princess franchise being aimed at girls for the past decade.)
