Perhaps, but Sonic still has a pretty surprisingly sized fanbase (young & old) out there despite the hate and controversy he gets from nerds online. (Plus haters tend to be more outspoken, so you can't always trust "popular opinion.") The 20+ year old Sonic comic series, and the new "Boom" TV series even seems to of helped boost his popularity with youngsters. He also has quite a bit of merch' out there. (I even saw an official Halloween costume of him in the store the other day.) So he's a bit more beloved then you'd think.


 
In fact, back in 1991 to 1995 Sonic was just as big as Pokemon was, believe it, or not. Ask anyone who was alive at that time. He was also the first game character to get a Balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, and has the longest running comic series. So Sonic's still got some things going for him. So just going off what the haters say, is rather biased, as they don't know everything about Sonic, or want to.
