It would’ve been too large in scope to cover in a single ep.
 
If Rainbow Dash were spoken to like that, she’d harbor resentment, leading to an inevitable subplot of learning forgiveness and letting go as she eventually warms back up to Fluttershy.
 
If Applejack were insulted like that, she’d be rightfully indignant, if not furious. Remember that Applejack is extremely proud of life’s career and the sacrifices she has made. Blood has been spilt over insults less severe. Depending on the exact insult, I could see her either becoming mortally depressed or starting a serious fight. Way too much could arise from this, seeing how it’s the oh-shit pre-climax plot peak of a 20-minute show.
 
Twilight would probably have the least severe reaction–but she’s a lecturer and would subvert Fluttershy with forceful magic.
 
Only Pinkie and Rarity had enough check on their ego to run away crestfallen but without contempt.
 
So yeah, Merriwether knows what she’s doing; it’s just her characterizations of Fluttershy aggravate me.

I always thought Pinkie and Rarity were enough for the purpose, if the rest were involved it could have broken Fluttershy.

I like how deriding the very things her friends take pride in and crushing their very spirit does not phase her, but using seeing herself angry is what it takes.
 
Actually, Rarity and Pinkie were excellent choices for support, here. I can see these two forgiving her quickly after a serious blow like that.
