The thing is Sombra had a character that wasn’t made apparent to us. He put the Crystal Heart someplace where no Crystal (Earth) Pony could get to. He barely missed a beat as he never wasted time with hammy speeches or banter with his foe. He seems pretty insane from his long imprisonment, making him into a wild beast of sorts. He had a constant presence throughout the story like LOTR’s Sauron and was causing great pains to Cadence.

Also while basic as all heck, isn’t wanting power and control through fear and suffering a defining character trait if anything?

I don’t know, I kinda liked Sombra. He seemed like an imposing threat overall, and had a few cool moments. (Like when he barrier broke his horn off, tricking you into thinking his broken horn was melting, but then it turned into those dark crystals, and he just regrows a new one. Now that was a cool moment.)
You don’t need alot of dialogue to be a threat, and he has a kinda mysteriousness about him due to his lack of characterization. I think he’s arguablly the most serious, and perhaps darkest villain we’ve had in the show, especially sense he enslaved ponies, and such.

@BP
I’m not sure if the crystal ponies count as a race didn’t Lauren say some time ago that there are only three pony races
Crystal ponies are just a subset of earth pony he didn’t enslave all earth ponies
plus there were like what 300 of them tops

Build up? I never even heard of the name King Sombra until two days before the premiere (and only because people on dA are fucking awful when it comes to hiding spoilers). So I was not hyped up about him at all.

No see, here’s the difference.

Sombra did nothing of consequence.

Voldemort DID things of consequence, it’s just these things were counteracted by Voldemort being bonecrushingly stupid.

No, he did, in fact, enslave an entire race (The crystal ponies).

“You can’t just talk about how evil and dangerous someone is, you have to actually show them being evil and dangerous”
Except they did show it. Which you pointed out in the VERY PREVIOUS SENTENCE. Facehoof

>Sombra had no real moments that defined him as a character

Exactly.Which is why I think making him a recurring villain would perhaps give us some insight. But well,I seems he’s dead for reals.

Ultimately, the main characters should be better characterized than the villains. Despite what a lot said, he’s no more “bland” than the other villains, it’s just that he’s not hammy or sexy (maybe).

Well, I’m off. Night.

It’s not that he did nothing, it’s that we don’t get a clear picture of his motivation. Sombra had no real moments that defined him as a character, whereas Voldemort’s buildup actually fleshed out his motivations for the evil he did.

Think about it. We know Sombra desires to enslave the crystal empire and use its power to spread darkness through the world. Here’s the question I have - WHY does he do this?

Voldemort decided to conquer the wizarding world in order to prove that he was the most powerful wizard who ever lived, because being a wizard gave him the fulfillment he never had as an orphan.

A hydra type makes sense.

I was thinking the reason he was underwhelming as a villain in this two parter was because the episode focus was more on (firstly)Twilight, then Cadence and Shiny and then Twi’s friends with the Whole Crystal Kingdom.Sombra short end of the stick.I thought using him as a recurring bad guy would give the writers a chance to properly fill us with more info about him.
ALIS

/Sarcasm. Yes King Sombra had a great build up.

Voldemorts build up you learned and understood why he does what he does. You get to learn what he did to make everyone fear him and see the recent after effects of his work, then you get 4 books with him.

Sombra you get a 5 minute speech with no explanation of why or how with 15min of him playing voiceless smoke monster.

It does not equate in the least. Sombra has about an inch of character, Voldemort has a Kilometer. I don’t hate Sombra, in fact his powers and design are cool, but I don’t think much of him beyond big cloud of evil.

After killing Harry, Voldie didn’t expect anyone to ever try to stand up to him again. The boy hero destined to stop him is dead: What can you do?

He wasn’t prepared for possum though.

I think the horn is like the head of a hydra. It just keeps coming back until you get rid of the source. And seeing how he blew up, I’m assuming the horn won’t do anything.
Amber

Wait a second, yeah Sombra was wiped out but his horn wasn’t destroyed. And if my memory doesn’t fail me,didn’t he regenerate when he got hurt my Cadance shield?

Refresh me if I’m wrong (it’s been a bit since I’ve read Deathly Hollows) but didn’t Voldemort’s world raping plan only fail precisely because it succeded? I remember that Harry was actually the last Horocrux, and killing him was what actually destroyed Voldemort.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

And I understand it’s a kids show and you can’t fit that much into each episode but still, he could have at least been more menacing.
Yorec
The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Yeah Sombra was a bit under cooked in terms of villains. He just didn’t do much but stand there and growl for most of the episodes until the last 5 minutes where he was easily befeated by the power of love. Making him the second villain to be beaten by it. And at least with Chrysalis she was defeated by the very thing she craved.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Except Voldie was legitimately terrifying and the grand culmination of his big plan was this fucking close to raping the world forever.

Sombra did literally nothing.
