No, that probably just had to do with being within proximity of Camp Everfree, the epicentre of this batch of magic. Taking the geodes just let them use the power elsewhere.

Wait, during EqG: LoE, their powers still worked when geodes were at least several hundreds meters away. So, taking them off will do nothing unless you’re kilometers away from them.
