You know, I’m REALLY not so sure about Sombra’s “death”. My guess is that he’ll be the main antagonist for the whole season 3 and his evil presence will be felt in every single episodes until a epic final battle.

He isn’t a alicorn, correct, but his exile could have been a stasis-like state.  
Also, we’re still not sure what he is. Seeing how there are crystal ponies, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to propose that there are other types of pseudo-elemental ponies (with King Sombra being some kind of metallic pony, which would explain his glowing red-hot horn).

I would actually argue that Discord’s imprisonment is worse than death. Stuck in stone, forever. Imagine if he’s still sentient through all of it. That is hell.
