It’s been one year since I played Fallout, and it was Casual mode. For someone who later finished Dark Souls 4 times, I need some closure on my gamer life.

Oh, pfff, easy.
 
Let me give you some advice.
 
First, pick up absolutely every edible thing you find, and hunt often. Hoard water religiously, even if it’s the dirty, irradiated kind. Still saves your life. And, of course, hoard stimpaks. If you have to kill someone for stimpaks, do it. Seriously, keep an eye on your health. In hardcore mode you can die of thirst, hunger, or lack of sleep. Stay healthy, sleep whenever you find a bed and eat and drink every hour or so.
 
Second, don’t hoard guns, hoard ammo. You only need five guns: A long-range weapon, a midrange weapon, a close range weapon, a melee weapon, and something that makes explosions. I like the anti-materiel rifle, the assault carbine, the riot shotgun, the 20mm repeating grenade rifle, and the chainsaw, myself, but your preferences may vary.
 
Third, invest stats and perks wisely. The higher damage and resistance on enemies doesn’t mean shit when you land a sneak attack critical with an anti-tank gun, and some of the more “meaningless” perks are incredibly useful later on. Invest in the perks that boost your experience gain early on, you’ll level much faster.
 
Oh, and stay the hell away from deathclaws and cazadores until you’re like level 30 or something. Even on a good day, they will rape you bloody. They will pass you around like a blunt and have their way with you. Please, protect your asshole.
 
And that’s it, really. It’s not too bad, just play smart.
