Well, Sunset didn’t know that the portal was unbreakable. If she does hit the portal, then nothing happens to the portal. Why? Because large objects that break stuff including a sledgehammer would go through the portal and hit someone near it. Sunset Shimmer’s such a liar in the climax of the film!

I do love how they kept having Gloriosa twitch, grab her head, etc. to show (beyond her voice tone and what she was doing) how utterly scrambled her brain was from the overload of Equestrian magic.

For a moment I was worried that he was gonna use that on her.
 
The controversial (and subsequently unused) alternate ending.
 
Kidding aside, there was a brief moment where I wondered if he was going to threaten her with it. The series would never reach the point of him using it, of course, but threatening to use it (while a bit dark) could maybe be a possibility.
