Description

So, for those unfamiliar with the terminology, a “moon” is the time it takes for the moon to go from Full to Full again, or from New to New again. So that got me to thinking about the Equestrian Calendar: It seems to be at least somewhat Lunisolar, but how so? Is it like the Hebrew Calendar, where the months remain the same, but cycle? I.E. would Equestrian January start in Winter, but as the years pass might be in spring, summer, fall, or eventually winter again? How many days are in an Equestrian Year? In an Equestrian Month (Moon)? How many moons are there in a year? How long is the Equestrian Day?

Of course, if this just seems a tremendous waste of your time, by all means, downvote and move on.
Cheers!

It’s later stated explicitly that they happen every 100 moons.

So much assumption that the lunar cycle for Equestria is similar to ours. It could cycle every two weeks. Or every ten days.
Lolhello

Well, if we assume that ponies in Equestria live as long as human and a moon cycle is the same as on earths we can say:

A moon cycle is a month, more or less,(Just to make it more simple) If there is a reunion every 100th moon that would be a familiy reunion approximately every 8th year
100/12 = 8,3 years.
Strange way to set it up but all right.

Granny Smith at one point says 6? moons ago that would be about 50 years ago:
8,3*6 = 50

So it can be possible given the conditions i mentioned higher earlier in the text or perhaps I am just over thinking it .-.

Haven’t you people ever heard of hyperbole? It’s like saying, “I haven’t seen you in ages.”

And a nitpick to OP - it’s the islamic calendar that cycles through the year (because 12 full moons are about 11 days shorter than a year). The Hebrew calendar adds an extra month every 2-3 years so the dates never get more than a month off. This is why Hanukkah is always around Christmas and Easter (which is modeled on Passover) is always in the Spring.

I was assuming they hadn’t invented the clock a thousand years prior to present day Equestria.

Also, BP doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Moons have always historically been used to refer to months.

Maybe Moon refers to “day” not actual “MOONth”

so 200 moons = about 1 year…. esp. if they don’t count new moons since those can’t be seen.

Assuming Equestria follows the same lunar schedule and has the same calender we do (365 days), that’s one full moon every 29.53 days, so 100 moons would be about once every 8.1 years.

…and now my head hurts.

Can't we all get along?
They’ve invented the clock in Equestria. There’s a clock tower in Appleloosa and Ponyville, and Angel Bunny has his own clock to tell Fluttershy she’s late for a very important date. Heck, Time Turner’s a clock specialist!

The big question is, are the seasons forced to fit the months? Oh, who am I kidding? Winter and Fall come when the ponies say they do. If the seasons don’t show up on time, then someone is getting sacked.

@Elric
Lol. That would be a bit of an issue. Can you imagine how much the whole Nightmare Moon debacle would’ve messed things up, what with the Clock not yet being invented?

I really like the idea of cycling months, personally. You could celebrate the Solstice/Equinox holidays once every year, but your other Holidays would be mixed up. Think, “Oh, this year, 4th of July is in the Winter! How exciting!”
Elric of Melnipony

Length of the month and of night-time hours depends on how Princess Luna feels. Length of daylight and the year depends on what kind of mood Celestia is in. Scheduling events in Equestra is pure hell.
Shadowflame

Well I know that it takes a month for a moon to go from one full moon to the next, so my guess is that they have a family reunion every 2 years or so.
