Theory: ‘Power Ponies’ is the name of the comic series as a whole, not just the team. The team came later and was initially composed of the seven most popular characters of the comic series.

Apart from the mane, the color scheme is the most distinctive part of a pony. Saddle Ranger inparticular looks almost nothing like Fluttershy. The vastly different personalities also help sell it.

Obviously, those are The Amazing Power Ponies and not the classic silver-age ones!

Of all the inconsistencies between the comics and the show, this seems like the one to bother me the least.
 
Comic books tend to have tons of AUs (the Spider-Man example someone brought up earlier is a great one, especially considering Into the Spider-Verse is still fairly recent). They also sometimes have multiple people take on the same role (for example Dick Greyson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Damian Wayne were all once Robin). Likewise, comic book characters get redesigned a lot, even if the character is the same person.
