Back when they first met, Rarity took it upon herself to teach Twilight all about gemstones and how to use them in fashion, as Twilight only really knows about how they can be used in magic. Twilight doesn’t mind it.
 
I imagine that Twi has had a crush on Rarity for a long time, though I don’t think even she realized she had a crush at all for a long time. She loves to spend time with Rarity and listen to her talk about gems and fashion. Twilight doesn’t find all of the facts all that interesting, but she loves seeing Rarity light up when she talks about the things she loves.
