As it turns out, the lecture isn’t COMPLETELY a clip show. The flashback scenes have some new compositions in them that weren’t present earlier in the episode.

So what are these, then? Twilight’s version of those moments?

Nightmare Moon: D-Don’t make me laugh… You weaklings, the Bearers of the Elements?
Twilight Sparkle: We might be weak, but teamwork makes us stronger. That’s what Applejack taught me at the cliff. Even when the odds were against us, she faced the facts head-on without shying away from the risks. She clearly represents the Element of Honesty!
Applejack: Honesty… Huh, never looked at it that way. Everyone else calls it annoying.
DM: That’s because it IS, sometimes.
