I think they left Starlight’s open on purpose, so the viewers could imagine her with either Sunburst or Trixie. Honestly, both are good choices so it could go either way.
 
So dear viewer the power is in your hands.

Well, it works.  
If the season 6 premier didn’t exist I woulda shipped Startrix too.
 
But then Season 6 showed us two bizzarely awkward pair of asocial failures, trying so hard to put band-aids on a broken relationship and disappointments.
 
Then Season 7 we got Starlight going fully irritated, depressed then yandere over Sunburst when he wasn’t paying attention to her.
 
How can I deny such a cute and tragic ship like that? Startrix is good, but Starburst feels like it could give both of them closure.

And I was misinformed, Startrix is far more popular amongst the fandom at large.

My bad, Startrix isn’t more popular. Which is understandable considering the classic nature of Sunburst, lifelong long lost friends and all that.

And frankly Startrix is infinitely more popular. And while it might not be the healthiest ship from a perspective (If you ignore the character development of the last three seasons.) It’s considerably more interesting.

Something I noticed, every couple stand beside each other in these “transition” pictures, within the picture we see Starlight and Trixie directly beside each other and the last time we see Starlight and Trixie in animation they’re beside each other. Coincidence? I THINK NOT! lol  
Anyway, it’s good enough for me.

Its because Trixie ships Sunburst with Starlight. Have people forgotten already that its because of Trixie that Sunburst managed to move in with Starlight to Ponyville? Trixie will always be Starlight’s best friend but in Starlight’s eyes, she holds no other pony in highest regard than “the first pony she ever cared about.”
 
That and Hasbro might not want to go woke because that leads to being broke. They can slip in little things that no one will ever notice unless they’re looking for it. Like obscure picture of Lyra and Bon Bon. And even if someone does ask them about it, they could always just say it was a picture of them as brides maids. Last thing a toy company wants to be accused of is “grooming” children.

Maybe, but as I said, the last episode only reveals two childs of cheesepie and sugarmac.  
I’m waiting to see a movie close the show and if so, they plan to do it with the next generation.
 
I can see a journey through time with the new generation to pass it to find a lost child in time, will be pretty cool.  
(attention spoiler: sunset would be the lost child and that is why his double does not exist)

The ending is open enough to have the ship survive.

Because there’s literally nothing to suggest that Starlight and Trixie’s relationship is anything but platonic. Just accept it’s not canon and move on with your life

It being possible and already done, and it needing to be done, are not mutually inclusive.
