What was really baity to me was how Twilight took the news of her brother’s betrothal. It’s like exactly how you would expect someone to react if they found out that their crush was getting hitched, not their brother. And her hatred of Cadence felt like the exact kind of thing you would imagine a jealous mind would make up. It felt like an Oedipus complex (kill dad, fuck mom) but for her brother instead.
 
Of course FiW really ran with this idea, which probably helped cement it into the public consciousness as well.
 
You do give AJ and Big Mac a short shrift, though. Yes, it’s a bit of a joke, but in their favor, Mac didn’t have a girlfriend until, like season 8? Neither did AJ. Shining was introduced already in the process of being married. And we don’t need to talk about how they tried to give Twilight a love interest (who, point to Shining, looks, sounds, and has a job at least a little bit like him. Again, FiW)

AJ is a cowpony. We first saw her with a thick accent and a cowboy hat. She lived on a farm. We saw her brother for all of like 5 seconds, and he said one thing (Eeeyup). There was no established relationship with her brother other than that they were related. Pairing them together was natural, but it was half a joke(hurr durr dumb incest hicks), and half the only thing that was available.
 
Shining Armor came along, and from the very moment he was introduced, his sister (not a farmer from the South or a cowboy from Texas, but a generic, relatable-to-everyone pony [person]) started singing songs about how much she loved him and how close they were. “We did everything together.” “BBBFF.” Come on, man. It was begging for it. It was incest bait from the start. You don’t even need to be that much of a pervert to read some sexual innuendo into it, and everybody in this fandom is a giant pervert.
 
Think about it. How many opposite-sex siblings do you know who were genuinely friends at a young age? Siblings fight all the time. Do you want to fuck Twilight? (The answer is yes, btw.) So imagine you are her big brother, she is a young filly, and she loves and trusts you completely. What do you do? Shining Armor was the perfect storm. Total incest bait.
