they’re very traceable actually. anyone can see every transaction, both the buyer and the seller. only trick is you can make an account without anyone’s permission, so even though the account number is public, if you can do that transaction otherwise anonymously, authorities will only be able to trace it back to that account number.
 
of course, taking your anonymous bitcoins in your anonymous account and getting actual cash for them without walking into a police ambush is another matter.
 
also most people actually can’t afford to see every transaction. the transaction database is currently about 243 gigabytes in size, so it takes quite a while to download over a residential connection, significant hard disk space to store, and a pretty powerful processor to analyze that much data any time this century. not something a “smartphone” can do.

I don’t know much about Bitcoin other than they’re used on the Dark Web due to the fact that it is untraceable and can’t be traced back to the original source.
