We aren’t talking about out of left field what-ifs. The series is over, and there was no intention put into play to ever release them.
 
While it is obviously not absolute, it is true that for all intents and purposes, then sentence is meant to be permanent within the context of the actual canon show and ending.
 
So while its not impossible, we must consider it as less then likely and treat it as such.
 
My point is, the fandom isn’t suddenly going to think of this scenario primarily by an optimistic what-if, they’re going to see it as is.

At any point she may decide to. I was merely talking about the fact that petrification is not necessarily permanent, not the relative likelihoods of one thing happening over another.

At what point? Like I said before, Celestia had no intention of freeing Discord at any point, Twilight didnt show any plans to free them in the future, and Twilight has no intention of ever intentionally undoing a decision made by Celestia even if a million years pass. That would be extremely out of character for Twilight.
 
Point is, chances are very high that they will never be freed if they didn’t make a better decision of judgement then and there. Inevitably some villain looking for allies will free them to spread evil across Equestria, and they will be even more hellbent on killing EVERYONE.
 
The message of the end of the show seems to be to always repeat past mistakes. Discord was the first real villain after Nightmare Moon, and he was angry he was turned to stone, so obviously, the solution for the villains was to turn the villains to stone again.
 
Twilight never questions anything Celestia does in all 9 seasons, and thus the cycle of bad decision making continues forever.

If the last petrification lasted 1000 years and they were surprised the spell was broken before, then its pretty well implied to be permanent by design.
