I theorize that changelings were originally either selectively bred or genetically modified from wasps to be friends with humans and feed off their positive emotions. I picture a healthy changeling being a nearly-white green color with hole-less wings, limbs, horn, and mane. When the humans were destroyed, the changelings turned to the love of other creatures, specifically ponies, as a secondary source. Sadly, that’s proven insufficient for their needs; and their dark gray coloring and holes are just proof of their state of deterioration.

What deteriorated condition are you speaking of?

It’s possible that a bug the size of Chrysalis could handle being sprayed with insecticide. Of course, on the other hand, in Chrysalis’s deteriorated condition, her size probably wouldn’t matter.
