And this might just be me but later on we see that Smolder is one of the more stronger and capable dragons in the Dragon Lands. Regardless, Ember really chose the right dragon to represent her country.
edit: Hehe, and it is also likely that Smolder would know this because the one and only command that Spike issued as the Dragon Lord was to her brother: hug everyone that you see on your way home.
