If he’s not willing to let you in, then there’s probably nothing to be let in on. My guess is that it’s partially a matter of personal style, partially a matter of laziness, and partially a matter of apathy. And some people may be a little defensive about the state of their own facial hair when others criticize others’ facial hair.
 
Either way, a beard as unkempt as that is not attractive to most people (impressive, sure. Attractive…ehhh…) And moreso, it’s not hygienic.
 
Besies, it could be the nicest lookin’ beard in the world, and you still couldn’t get me within five feet of the guy unless some money was involved.
 
There’s really nothing to get. Personal preference or not, that is not a clean look. It’s just nasty, yo. Shave or trim, bruh.
