Is Shade´s fault: He passively absorbs all the Light & Love around him.
[Technically Speaking] Since Rarity is a “Radiant” kind of person, the sudden increased FLUX going through her skin stimulated the natural production of melanin (like if she lived her whole life in a beach at the Equator).
Alternatively -> Her “Diamond_based” magic shifted into “coal” [atomically the same] as a way to protect her.
