Honestly, I’m glad they kept them as villains. None of them would really accept friendship. Chrysalis spent her entire life manipulating people or ordering her changelings around. She sees everyone else as tools to use as dispose of. Tirek was close to only one person, who ended up betraying him because he saw how power-hungry Tirek was. When Tirek found someone else who trusted him, Discord, he betrayed him in turn because he now saw trust as weak and instead chose to focus on power. Cozy Glow only sees “friends” as people she can use to obtain power. She made friends simply as an end goal. I cannot see them actually learning friendship and reforming.

Exactly. I understand our love and fascination with them as villains. But we shouldn’t forget that they are still villains. That’s part of why I like them. Villains don’t have to have redeeming qualities to be fun or interesting.

Yeah, nothing we’ve seen of them shows they’d ever want to change their ways. The people you mention reforming at least had aspects that you could buy them reforming. The Changelings had lived their entire lives under Chrysalis’s rule and need love to survive. And as we saw with Thorax, Changelings aren’t just life-draining remorseless monsters, they have minds of their own. So them reforming isn’t a big deal. Neither is Starlight, who wasn’t just doing what she did for power even in her introductory episode. And at least Discord and Starlight have been shown they still aren’t all the way completely changed from their earlier ways.

And she’s right, it shouldn’t be overdone. Because not every villain deserves redemption. That’s one of the things that made me dislike Steven Universe. That somehow you can just “redeem” awful people and everything will be alright. Sometimes, people can’t be saved.

Diamond Tiara worked because she still had room to change. She was just a spoiled kid so expanding her and showing she’s a victim herself works. Also, unlike Cozy Glow she didn’t try to take over the kingdom and try to turn everyone against each other.

When you have a villain that has room to change, it works. Or you go the Darth Vader route where the villain was first a hero before falling. As you said, it depends on how it’s done.

She really didn’t have to convince Tirek and Cozy Glow. Once the realized they were about to admit friendship helped them they immediately did a 180. Like Chrysalis, they view true friendship as a weakness.

I believe someone even claim Chrysalis was invading canterlot back in season 2 just to feed her subjects however you can clearly tell she was enjoying it.
oh and as I mentioned before she didn’t even need to be reformed for people to complain about her being reformed in fact you will find people complaining about the reformation before it even happened or even if

I agree, despite how much the fandom likes to “romanticize” characters like Chrysalis & Tirek, they don’t exactly have any redeemable qualities in canon. (I’m sorry, but Chrysalis is not some “adorable sweet bug mother,” nor is Tirek a “nice misunderstood guy”)

I accept that, and I’m fine with some villains staying villains. As I said, even if they were reformed, fans would just complain about how overboard the series is with that, and such. Some were actually begging not to reform them before the finale, and let’s not forget all the drama over reforming the Changeling kingdom, or Starlight, and even Discord. In fact, Lauren Faust even stated she’s not fond of the “reforming villains” trope, despite penning Nightmare Moon/Luna’s reformation. (I assume she meant she’s not against it, but doesn’t like overdoing it.)

I’m not against reforming a few though. Reforming Diamond Tiara worked for me, because we hardly knew anything about her besides “lol blank flanks,” and it finally allowed us to see other sides to her character, and why she bullied the CMC. (And it wasn’t just her Mother, it seemed hinted she had issues with understanding her cutie-mark, and was kinda jealous the CMC got along so well with others, had families that got along, and such.)
Plus her sad song is probably one of the most adorable, and heart breaking moments in the whole series.
So it really depends on how it’s done.

They really were not on their way to becoming good on their own though. If left to their own devices, they’d still be going around trying to conquer Equestria. But on the journey to get the Bell, they came the closest they had to actually being good, and they still blew it. They’d rather commit evil rather than make an effort to reform. It’s their own choice.

Nothing what we’ve seen of Chrysalis or Tirek previously shows they are redeemable. Chrysalis manipulated Shining Armor, turned him against his sister, used Shining Armor’s love for Cadence to try and conquer Equestria, and was planning to feed on all of Equestria’s inhabitants love. Tirek used Discord to get him more power, and then stabbed Discord in the back despite him showing no signs of disloyalty just to increase his power. They are in no way redeemable people.

Except Grogar would’ve been just introduced, so of course it’d be easy for him to be irredeemable. With the other three, it’s much stronger. They won’t reform. And given all they’ve done, I can’t see them reforming without it being really contrived. It’s like with the Diamonds in Steven Universe, they shouldn’t have been reformed.
