Also, I blame the people in Post-Apoc Empire for coming up with a mafia-verse where the villains are, dun dun duuuuun, mafioso. Or yakuza, jury’s still out which one. Both tend to wear suits in their day-to-day activities. Though, I did base Sombra’s suit on Italian style of suit.
Though, I think Grogar would be the Don though… But, I feel Sombra makes a pretty decent (if a bit backstabbing) Capo.
I can’t say I’m a huge expert on yakuza either, I’m Finnish, for Celestia’s sake. I’m mostly going off of wikipedia and youtubers who live in japan have told.
Like, some of the bigger yakuza gangs have thousands of members (the biggest around 9000), so you can really see how the different structure works better. It is based on family structure, hence where the “aniki” and “anesan” in anime and other japanese popular media. It is quite a fascinating subject, really. Of course, Yakuza still do very much crime, including drug and human trafficing etc so outside of fiction, they’re really not nice people.
Yeah, I can see a game parlor being run by Sombra, or blackmailing. Hell, considering it is Sombra we’re speaking about, even human trafficking doesn’t sound so far fetched, depending on how evil you want to portray him as.
I would personally, think the big villains like Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis, Tirek and so on, would be bosses in their own right as well. Stygian would probably stay to the sidelines, if included, taking care of money and booking. Could even be a fairly wicked lawyer (yes, lawyers are a thing in yakuza, for multiple reasons, including having actual legitimate businesses).
I admittedly don’t know much about how the Yakuza works (mostly because I’m what the experts would call ‘an idiot’), but the way you’ve explained it makes it sound 100% more fitting than a singular mafia gang! Everyone does their own thing but still ultimately answer to one big bad (or Oyabun if I’m using the terminology correctly) so no-one really feels like ‘just another gang member’ but their own entirely different threat. Sounds like I need to read up on the Yakuza.
What about a gambling ring? Rigged or not, whether small-time (counting cards or loaded dice) or big-time (blackmailing sports athletes to throw a game after betting against them)?
Well, personally I prefer the idea of Yakuza, not because of my past as a utter and complete weeaboo, but because the yakuza’s structure is broader. People under Oyabun (family head, or the don in this situation) can have their own gangs that are part of the yakuza as a whole. I feel it fits our favorite villains a lot better than Mafia does, in that they’re still bosses in their own right, but still answer to someone else, in this case, Grogar.
Also, the tattoos… I need to design the tattoos. I think I’m going to take some cues of both the traditional japanese tattoos (which many yakuza wear), and Celestia’s stained windows.
I can totally see Sombra run some seedy host club or something of the sort. Chryssi too, would fit this, I feel. Perhaps Sombra does the blackmail of stockholders etc.? I will gladly take opinions on this.

I need to hear more of this.
I agree
