Because his personality wasn’t dialed up to 11 like everyone else, and they think that’s somehow a flaw.
This fandom listens to layman’s spout TVTropes and think pretentiousness is a badge of honor; I’d ignore them for the sake of your sanity.

They are all shown grown up at the end of the series finale.
They are all implied to be sort of more middle school-high school aged by the start. Basically, they’re practically kids until the “future” segment

I thought the student six Where collage kids like isn’t smolder supposed to be like 20?(I’ve aways seen her as 20)
I have to admit, it took me a long time to really appreciate this character… like, until well after the series finale. I used to think he was the “blandest” of the Student Six. Even today, I still feel they could have explored his character more.
But generally, now, I adore him! He’s the very picture of teenaged adorkableness!
