That’s kind of what I’m getting at. You’re wrong if you think the two of them hanging out had no significance, but it also didn’t have any story impact which is why I personally believe it was some member of DHX’s own personal meddling to some end. To my understanding, the same thing happened in Equestria Girls, the lead story border was a big shipper in their own right which is the main reason we ended up with so much les-yay in that series.

And then Sugar Belle came along.

I don’t know what the deal was with the two of them hanging out in the background a lot was, but you’d have to be pretty blind to think it didn’t mean anything.
 
I always assumed that it meant someone somewhere on the FiM staff either shipped them, or was messing with the shippers for giggles.

Honestly, think the message of this episode would get a bit muddy if they actually did get together in the end

It doesn’t matter how much they were hanging out in the background the actual episode did not Make them a couple.  
And the lessen of the episode was that you shouldn’t force a relationship Making them an actual couple could weaken it

The latter seasons are a textbook example of what not to do with continuity.
