Headcanon backstory:
 
He conceived on accident while Rainbow Dash and Soarin were still dating. When they found out, Rainbow called in sick for work and stayed locked up in their cloud home for years for months until their friends went to check on them was and found out their secret. They encouraged them to tell their then boyfriend and as soon as Soarin found out they started organizing a wedding so they’d have a stable home for the foal to grow. The wedding was delayed for a few months and Rainbow had to get married in their 9th month. When at the altar their water broke and they had to be rushed to the hospital where Tropical Flash was born. The wedding was finalized in that same hospital room. Rainbow Dash and Soarin moved in together with their son in Soarin’s house planning to start out their new happy life together.  
It seemed like a happy start for little Trop. He grew especially attached to his ‘‘mother’’. He idolized them and wanted to be just like them during his baby and toddler years, even after they mistreated him several times, especially towards the end of their relationship. Upon coming out as non-binary, a lot of ruckus erupted in the household and Trop’s parents would fight really often. He never had anything explained to him and so he kept calling Rainbow ‘‘mommy’’ despite the fact that that triggered their gender dysphoria. Rainbow Dash would often disappear from their home completely for days on end and all Tropical Flash would do is daydream of them returning. Deep down he knew Rainbow didn’t love him as much as they claimed to do, but he tried to convince himself they loved him.  
When he was 5 he was told he was going on a vacation to his grandparents for a few months. This confused him, but he obliged. When the ‘‘vacation’’ was over, he returned home and started looking for his parents. They were nowhere to be found, but in their room he found a cradle with a little pegasus filly in it and a label saying ‘‘Stormy’’. He quickly came to the conclusion this was his baby sister and immediately took her out of her bed to play with her. After playing with Stormy for a while he heard the front door open and he expected his parents to walk in. Well, he was half right. Rainbow Dash was there, but they were with a creature he’d never seen before. She looked liked a bird. They got on the coach and started taking part in a rather suggestive act when Soarin walked in several moments later. Another fight erupted, this one louder and more violent then the rest of the fights Trop had watched his parents have. It ended with his father kicking out Rainbow Dash and the mysterious guest out of the house and telling them to never return. After Soarin calmed down a bit and sat on the coach Tropical finally felt safe enough to ask him what had just happened. The words that came out of his father’s mouth would shock his world forever. ‘‘Mommy doesn’t love us anymore.’’. This confirmed Trop’s worst suspicions all along and when the court was solving the custody issue, they turned to him to ask who he’d prefer to stay with. He said that his mother clearly didn’t love him anymore and he’s prefer to stay with his dad.  
Things would only get worse from here. At school Tropical had been this jovial, sociable colt, who was a general joy to have around. Since the divorce many of his friends had noticed him become sadder and more depressed. He started isolating himself and two grades later he became the target of bullying. No foal in his class understood why he was acting the way he was and they all assumed he was just being ‘‘edgy’’ and ‘‘emo’’ for the sake of it and decided to make fun of him for it. This even escalated to physical violence in many cases. Meanwhile at home his father had lost his high-paying job as a wonderbolt, developed several addictions and slowly became more aggressive and unloving. They even got evicted out of their house and after a short period of being homeless they found an apartment to live in.  
Tropical got his cutie mark at 9 when he won a flying race against his bullies. Despite that, the bullying didn’t stop. He started self-harming soon after that to cope with, well, everything. His only reason to live at that point was to protect and just be there for his sister, Stormy. It didn’t help that his classmates caught on to his liking to colts and started calling him ‘‘gay’’. This made Trop suppress his sexuality.  
When he was 11 a new colt moved to his class called Sky Destroyer. Not knowing Tropical Flash was considered the ultimate loser in the class he sat next to him and sparked a conversation with him during class. The two of them became pretty good friends despite the bullies trying to convince Sky not to befriend Trop. Sky soon became a target of bullying as well, but he didn’t care. He started teaching Tropical how to stop caring as well. Sky introduced him to the gang of teenage colts he hung out with, who did drugs and took part in all sorts of crimes. Soon Sky and Tropical became the friends, who skipped class to smoke at the back of the school. Heck, Trop couldn’t help, but to fall in love with Sky.  
Upon graduating at 13 (how the Equestrian educational system works in my next gen verse) his father forced him to take up a job as a weather pony. Tropical Flash hated it, but he obliged and found out Sky’s mother had made him do the same thing.
 
Random Facts:
 
-Tropical suffers from undiagnosed BPD (borderline personality disorder)
 
-he started doing drugs at 12. He smoked for a very short time, but he gave it up. Despite doing drugs he refuses to drink or smoke, because he doesn’t want to turn out like his father.
 
-If you haven’t guessed already, he has severe mommy and daddy issues and is highly emotionally unstable.
 
-He’s still emotionally attached to Stormy and really protective of her. He hides all of his bad habits from her, despite her being very aware of them.
 
-Despite having a cutie mark, Tropical still isn’t completely sure about his purpose in life. He does have dreams of becoming a wonderbolt, despite hating those dreams, because his father is also encouraging him to go in that direction.
 
-He’s really close friends with Dusk Gold and Bella Balloon. He met them while his parents were still married and even though their connection was cut off for a brief time, Bella and Dusk found a way to reach out to him and rekindle their friendship.
