The horns of the unicorns were not so sharp in the G4. Only the alicorns, oriental unicorns such as the Mistmane and a particular “breed / breed” with Starswirl (stallion) and Fleur-de-lis (mare) had similar horns - most unicorns had short and blunt horns. It is possible that the unicorns had learned how to use their horns as tools and as weapons, and thus got more robust and sharper horns than in the G4 - they can nail a pony in an attack.
 
The unicorns may have been very far down, but they were not too bad compared to the pegasi and the earth ponies as seen when the Mane 5 got there and Sunny met Alphabittle, they have managed to connect modern technology with nature in a way like the environmentalists in our world would have turned green with envy
