Unsurprisingly, Starlight Glimmer’s childhood was not a happy one. Her mother, Satin Star, was not the best mother, nor was she as loving as a mother should be. Satin Star was the daughter of a rich Canterlot unicorn, she was firstborn and expected to inherit her family’s fortune and live comfortably with some dumb husband and a nanny to raise her foals. What she got instead was her parents getting a divorce when Satin was 10 because her father knocked up his secretary. Her father got custody of Satin and swiftly married his mistress. In less than a year Satin was living in a much smaller home with a woman that she remembered being babysat by asking her to call her ‘mom’ and a baby sister she didn’t want. This baby sister was none other than Twilight Velvet. Velvet was the golden child, born of ‘love’ and doted on constantly. Satin was enraged and offended by where her life had gone.
By 18, Satin had found herself a man who she thought could take her away from her life and make her happy, her Firelight. Satin and Firelight were married by 20 and had moved to Sires Hollow by 22. Satin and Firelight were happy, with his work as a historian and blacksmith, Firelight kept the bills paid, while Satin used her magic to make some cash on the side for their savings. Those savings quickly went down the drain when Satin got pregnant, as the pregnancy was riddled by health problems and the birth nearly killed her. But in the end they had their little Starlight, a beautiful baby girl who Firelight was instantly enamored with. Satin on the other hand associated her newborn with the weakness of her pregnancy and the fear of the birth, and never truly bonded with her foal like a mother should.
Starlight grew up well cared for, but never really loved with the same attentiveness as her peers. Satin was inattentive and avoided being too cuddly with Starlight, and Firelight worked all hours of the day to make up for the hospital bills as well as pay their regular bills. Starlight had her friends though, and spent her days playing in the dirt with Sunburst and their friends. When Starlight was gone, Satin was left alone all day, and eventually grew bored and would slip out from time to time to visit cafes in town. It was during these afternoon excursions that Satin met a handsome stallion called Dark Roast, and the two hit it off. Within a few short months, Satin and Dark Roast went from chatting at the coffee bar, to necking in the stock room, to afternoon romps in Satin’s marriage bed, all without her husband and daughter knowing, and with Dark Roast equally unaware of his lover’s second life.
It all came crashing down, however, when Firelight came home early on a beautiful spring day to find his darling wife in bed with a stranger. He was truly heartbroken and outraged. He had worked so hard to keep his family happy, to let Stain stay home and care for their daughter, to make sure Starlight had everything she needed and more, and this is how Satin repaid him, with lies and unfaithfulness. Starlight, who was really and truly unaware, was sent to stay with Sunburst for a few days while her parents sorted out what would happen next. Satin and Firelight decided to divorce, with Starlight staying with Firelight, while Satin was to leave Sires Hollow with a little money to keep her off the streets, and she was to stay away until Starlight was old enough to understand what had happened.
And so, Satin packed up her things and left with Dark Roast. Starlight came home to discover that her mother was going away, and would not be coming back for a long time, if ever. She was inconsolable, as any child would be. Firelight panicked when his darling girl asked why Mommy had gone away, and why she didn’t take her with her. He crafted what he thought would be a gentle lie that Starlight would understand, that Mommy’s special talent, magic, was needed far away, and she had to go and help the ponies who needed her. He told her that Satin loved Starlight very much, but the journey was long and hard, and she wanted Starlight to be safe. Being only 7, Starlight accepted this lie in the same way a child accepts that their puppy ran away.
Things were rough for a while, as Firelight took more time off work to watch Starlight and make sure she got off to school and home safely every day, but eventually things were normal again. That was until Sunburst got his cutie mark. His talent, the same as Starlight’s mother, was magic. And within a week of his cutie mark appearing, a letter from Canterlot came and asked Sunburst to come to Celestia’s school to learn, and off he went. Starlight was alone again, with no close friends and her father only being around in the mornings and evenings. School was hell, as the older bullies all knew that Satin ran off with Dark Roast, and teased Starlight endlessly, saying her Mommy didn’t want her, that Firelight was a chump, that Satin was a whore. Starlight got angry, she got in fights, and she didn’t fight fair. Starlight was a hair puller and had a mouth like a sailor, saying nasty things that she didn’t under stand the meaning of. She quickly gained a reputation as the town failure, as she was barely passing her classes and was constantly in trouble both at school and at home. And through it all she was a blank flank.
Starlight was quickly becoming a menace, and even Firelight was helpless to stop his daughter. She was destroying herself and was going to take everyone down with her. She painted her room black and painted a black ‘X’ over her flanks, and started hanging around the drop outs, staying out late and doing Celestia knows what in the woods outside of town. But despite it all, she graduated from school, and got a job in the town library. She saved every bit she made and did manual labor on weekends, lugging stones out of the quarry outside of town.
At 19, she packed up her things, took her savings, and left town without even telling her father, leaving a note saying that she was going to find her mother and find a purpose in her life. She found herself in Canterlot, working in the royal library and living in a cramped apartment with what felt like 1000 roommates. It wasn’t long before fate reunited Starlight with her mother. She met Satin by chance outside of the grocery store, flanked by a dusty brown foal. Satin was shocked out of her skin to see her daughter in Canterlot, living a paupers life and searching for purpose in her life. Starlight was unsure of how to feel, on one hand, her mother was happy and safe, with a new child and husband, but on the other hand, she had lied and left Starlight to be with someone else and to have a new baby. Satin invited Starlight to come and stay with her, even for a few days to catch up. Starlight agreed.
Satin’s life was not one of glamour, but it was comfortable. She had Dark Roast and she had their son, Chocolate Sun. Chocolate Sun was a quiet and unassuming boy, but he had everything Starlight didn’t. He had his cutie mark, he had an easy life with plenty of friends, and most of all he had Satin’s love. Starlight only Stayed one night, and left in the morning to go to work. There, in a state of grief and envy, she poured over tome after tome, searching for some way to change her life. She found what she wanted in two spells, both by famed sorcerer Starswirl the Bearded. She combined several spells to create one that would remove the cutie marks of ponies, and one to go back in time. In some act of divine irony, this spell-altering is what earned her cutie mark. With what she interpreted to be a sign from the universe that her destiny was to relieve ponies from the cutie marks that had hurt her so much, she abandoned the idea of hurting her mother, and instead fled Canterlot all together.
She traveled deep into the mountains and found a place to call her own, and set out to find other ponies like her that would give up her cutie marks in the pursuit of relieving themselves and the ponies around them from the burden and obligation of their special talents. And thus Our Town was born.
