After watching the trailer I have one thing to say.

Probably just time. If a lot of time has passed, rumours and campfire stories probably have been getting bigger and bigger. What probably was a story about a unicorn piercing an apple with its horn turned into the story of a blood thirsty unicorn who gets joy by stabbing innocent earth ponies.
 
Probably like our popular stories. They are probably greatly exaggerated.

Seems to be that way. If you pay close attention while the ponies are in modern times the unicorns seem to be behind the rest technologically; Jungle DDR reference aside the most recent technology I’ve seen them have is baked beans. Not even the can opener, which would put them between 1772 and 1855 technologically (In comparison FiM is somewhere between 1830 and 2020, the pegasi are at least 2005 and the earth ponies could be anywhere between 1900 and 2020 while leaning closer to 1980-2010)
