Yet in the episodes with dragons, their size also seems to vary with age and body type. The Dragon Lord (before Ember) was absolutely massive, and he seemed to be the eldest rather than just the most greedy.
 
Many fanfictions call this a special “greed growth” for Spike, and I like the idea that in the wild, it’s a way for a rather solitary species to be able to protect a hoard without the physical maturity to do so properly. The more important the hoard is to the dragon, the better they are able to protect it while still immature.

Hm. Maybe if it’s more related to maturity? Like turning into a dog as a 20yo makes you a 3yo dog instead of a 20yo dog.

I really do hope this becomes an episode at some point.
 
Random hypothesis, though. If dragon size/age is related to greed, wouldn’t Flutterdragon be even smaller than Spike?
