Changelings being able to impregnate ponies just makes so much sense in my headcanon, since the race is obviously a huge shout-out to mythological/folkloric fey changelings. Being able to impregnate stallions? That’s just personal fetish fuel. Changelings all being hermaphroditic, because it helps them be able to assume the forms of stallions and mares when needed? Falls somewhere in between the two.

Heck no. I think the polar opposite. It’s very hard for me to explain the difference, how I see it at least. When I talk objectiveness I’m looking at it analytically, judging it the way a teacher would grade a sentence for proper spelling and grammar and structure. When I talk subjectiveness, that’s judging it like a fan and being like “I just don’t like a character” or “I wish there was more of something”. I think it’s really important to separate them like that because, like you said, people like what they like and something being “objectively good or bad” doesn’t mean people have to, or are going to, like or hate it. And also, things should be analyzed both as critics and as fans the way Rotten Tomatoes does it with critical and audience scores. A different way to look at it, is just because a meal is “made properly” doesn’t mean you’ll like it, and just because a meal is “made badly” doesn’t mean you’re not going to like it :D

The Rey is a Palpatine twist is a weird one to judge. Subjectively it’s all over the place, like people make really good arguments for and against Rey being related to Palpatine. Objectively, it’s a decent twist in its own right but I think it’s bad writing because it was deliberately done to screw with what the previous movie did just so a new director could do his own thing. Like, I’m normally really for directors being daring and willing to step out of the box, but you don’t come into the mid-point of a story-driven trilogy with an arcing canonical narrative and tear it down to do your own new stuff like that’s just really bad form. You can say their fans took that stuff way too seriously, and yeah they cared too much, but damn they were 100% in-the-right for being mad. Imagine if in Season 4 of MLP a new producer took over and just decided that Celestia was evil all along and she killed Twilight Sparkle and so the rest of the Mane Six invent guns to fight her: even if you could argue it’s “cool” or “a good twist”, it’s just not a good thing to do and it would have ruined the show XD
 
There’s a lot of different ways they could have done it, but ultimately I think it would have been best if it was just really Grogar. It’s like I asked before: was the payoff of that twist really worth not bringing back the most iconic villain of G1? :D

That’s a fair point. I won’t tell people how to feel about things so I’ll still understand if some people do like the Grogar thing. Again, “objectively” is the wrong word to use here. Of course everybody is allowed to think it’s a good idea. If some people enjoy seeing their favorite villain as a dominating big bad, then sure. I myself do kind of enjoy Cozy Glow’s alicorn form and her temporary giant chaos form. She’s still a pretty cool villain for me. Plus Starlight is pretty cool in the finale fighting Chrysalis and being so confident. :P

I get it, but even if Grogar was real and he was the big bad of the last season and the legion of doom were just his cronies, I’m pretty sure some people would’ve gotten upset that their favorite villains, Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow, got usurped and weren’t the main antagonists of the last episode. There’s just no way to please everybody.

Both ideas are actually pretty good. Honestly with Rey being revealed as a Palpatine it would actually make sense for her to be bad. That would certainly be a better way to “subvert expectations” them just killing the new big bad. :D
 
I like the Discord idea even more. It would actually be cool that the three villains are used to show a different kind of friendship, villain friendship. It would give Twilight a bigger and much more meaningful challenge, like they’ll just be like “But we are friends too. Who are you to break our friendship apart, princess of friendship?” It’s like when Starlight made the bullies stop bullying filly Fluttershy except much more, throwing off Twilight’s whole philosophy and fight with the idea that there can be “bad friendship”. This will keep Discord’s development and makes the Legion of Doom a bigger challenge than just powered up past villains. They don’t need to be magically and physically stronger than the Mane Six to be challenging because the Mane Six would feel like they shouldn’t defeat them. It’s so much better. I always only thought Grogar should be real and maybe Scorpan or something should make an appearance for this finale to be better but I never thought of that! :D

Objectively is a bad word to use here. But I believe this defies the writing principle “Chekhov’s gun” in a way. If you talk about a gun in the first chapter, that gun has to be used at least once in later chapters, or why bother making a deal out of it at all? The same applies to Grogar. If Grogar seems like such a big deal in the first episode, shouldn’t he actually be the big bad of season 9? If he doesn’t even exist, why make him show up in the first place? Isn’t that a waste of space then? All I’m saying is if it breaks a writing principle, wouldn’t it be bad writing? I know there are definitely people who like the decision but it does break one of the writing principle most people know about.

I believe it’s bad objectively since, purely from a writing standpoint, it didn’t advance the plot in a meaningful way, it didn’t reveal anything new about any characters, it wasn’t necessary at all, and it actually went against character development. In other words, not only was there no good reason to do it, but it also was worse than if they hadn’t done it. Even if I liked it I’d struggle to explain why I thought it wasn’t a bad idea XD

I kind of think Kylo Ren was meant to be the protagonist and Rey the antagonist at some point, but they wussed out at the last second and swapped their roles because they didn’t think a villain protagonist and a hero antagonist would go over well. Kylo Ren is the one with the backstory, who has a relationship with the other characters, has character growth, a mentor, faces obstacles to overcome, has a more powerful foe who defeats him early on and forces him to become stronger to overcome, has a revelation about himself, improves as a person, and ultimately saves the day. Rey on the other hand is a very static character in terms of growth and power, just casually gets to be strong, and has no real personality beyond being a plot device. Like, Kylo Ren goes through the whole Hero’s Journey (a protagonist role) while Rey largely serves as a motivating factor for him (an antagonist role) :D
 
I actually would have really liked if he was actually trying to redeem them via the Power of Friendship. He saw what the ponies had done with him, Starlight, Tempest Shadow, and he thought those three deserved a chance like he got. Like, Grogar’s Bell was like the “amulet” Twilight wore in Magic Duel and didn’t actually do jack shit, and Discord believed that if he could teach them to like each other and value more in life than just seeking power and looking out for themselves that they would change like he did, and then it just ultimately didn’t work and in fact they became more dangerous than ever as friends. In fact, I kind of wonder if that’s what they wanted to do at some point: if “Grogar” was only using them as disposable villains to give Twilight a confidence boost, then why would he care if the villains were working together and befriending one another? :D

Well, Star War has Adam Driver as the best part of the sequel trilogy Kylo Ren and I honestly also like the rest of the cast. I don’t watch GOT so I don’t know what’s good about the last season. But yeah, MLP still has cute ponies and honestly the final fight scene of Mane Six+Spike vs Legion of Doom is pretty cool. I still wish the whole finale could be grander but I guess I can’t change anything now. :P
 
Exactly, it’s just disappointing to know he’s seemingly never learned anything from his time with Fluttershy, the Mane Six, Spike, and Big Mac. Also really sad that the defense for what Discord did is usually “Of course he did that. He’s the embodiment of chaos”, “That’s his nature he can’t help it!” like is that all he is then? Chaos and the negative effect of it? I mean wouldn’t it be better for him to break out of that? We put it down as Discord’s nature like it’s a good thing but well it’s not. If his chaotic nature is still causing harm we should want him to grow and change, or at least use his chaos positively. Yes he can use his chaos positively as proven by him breaking Sugar Belle’s wagon wheel so Big Mac could catch up to her. It’s so sad that’s the one and only time we have that subtle Discord goodness where he uses his power to help, but with that it is clear he can do good with chaos. We just don’t let him. His reformation should push him to break out of his chaotic evil nature and turn him more chaotic good. I mean what would be the point of reforming him then?

It is sort of the same thing, though the last season of MLP at least had a lot to like about it. Like, the majority of it was good. Like, I really like how they dialed back the extraneous stuff from the last few seasons and put a lot of the focus back on the main characters, I love how the villains of the season had likes, interests, hobbies, and small-time goals, and character faults, and personality quirks, and even some redeeming qualities (where villains up until now have either been irredeemably evil and focused on power for the sake of it, or just a “misguided good guy” who’s only evil because they don’t have friends), we finally got a true Celestia and Luna episode, and I loved the idea of all the characters the Mane Six have spent 9 seasons helping, saving, and befriending all came to their rescue in the end. Season 9 was a great way to end the series, and really the only objectively bad thing was the Grogar is Discord twist I think :D
 
You know what I find sad about it, is it rendered his entire reformation moot in a way. His final act in the series was betraying and endangering others for a stupid reason, which is exactly what made him a villain in his first appearance. He was the only true villain in the entire series to genuinely be reformed by the power of friendship, that is a bad person with no sob story, no excuses, no magical brainwashing, just he was bad and his relationship with a friend made him want to be better, so it’s kind of a bummer that in the end he still clearly hasn’t learned how to be a friend and how not to be a villain. If this had happened in Season 7 or 8 I would have been totally fine with it, but him pulling that in Season 9 basically means that, all along, the ponies would have been better off if they just left him sealed in stone :P

I probably should’ve thought of the Last Jedi from the start because it’s the same “subverting expectations” everyone had problems with around the time it came out. I wonder how many people thought of that when Grogar was revealed. I mean if you have problems with TLJ or GOT season 8 you should probably have problems with that, right?
 
As much as I don’t like Discord. I’m still disappointed they picked him of all characters to do that. His last few episodes with Big Mac’s love life was honestly giving him more good points and he was growing on me. I was so close to going back to liking him again until they made him do that, as if Discord didn’t commit enough sins already. It’s like he and his chaotic nature will do nothing but negative. A bit of me is like “he deserved better!”. The finale not only gave us a buildup with a poor result, but also hurt Discord’s progress by making him the chaotic troublemaker again.
