I see what you are trying to say although I think it would be better if you made the comparison being able to read English and being able to read the writing system based on the Chinese character system called chữ nôm. (that was used before Portuguese Catholic missionaries created a writing system based on their own Latin alphabet to translate Vietnamese and to make it easier to learn for Europeans.)
That was not exactly the point I was trying to make though so I’ll try to explain it in a more round about way..
if they point out that One pony is able to read wouldn’t imply that it’s something Special?
like a specialized skill or attribute? like flight or magic or maybe they saying “Most other Ponies Can’t read” ?
Not that it is a bad thing if most ponies can’t read especially if there is no need to read or write words in pony society.
Back in the Egyptian era most people could not read the written language but they could understand what a symbol meant when it was shown to them. similar to (if I go real basic in my metaphor) traffic signs or hand signals that scuba divers use.
So I’ll change the original question a little bit. is the ability to be able to read as a Pony useful enough to be highlighted as something special to be mentioned as “X Pony can Read”? and could other ponies lean how to read as well?
And if more ponies could read, wouldn’t that lessen the “uniqueness” of the skill from being a unique skill to one pony to something just common and learnable by all?
(Example statement: “X Pony can Read”, reply: “Yes and?, these hundreds of other ponies can read as well”)
yes books exist in the pony universe but I find that if there is a written pony language it’s not been explored enough in the show and most of the times when we have seen the text of a book they looked more like formulaic runes, images and scribbles and used by only the most academic of pony.
There is also a difference in being able to read and the ability to translate i.e. glyphs, signs and symbols like Nordic runes, Egyptian hieroglyphs or Asian hanzi / kanji to meaningful words and knowing the native alphabet (if the pony language has something as a similar facsimile).
In my opinion We as the watcher of the show are also lacking a fundamental bit of information namely What is the worth of being able to read when living in a society where we can hypothesize that Most can’t or don’t have to read words for some reason. be it never having had the chance to learn how to read or not interested in learning how to read.
This is just a theory of course

Being able to read English doesn’t mean you can read Vietnamese, even if they both use the same script at its core. The ability to read should be judged in each one’s native language, or at the very least the (de facto) official language of the place they live in.

Quick Question .. is reading as we humans know it with letters and words even a useful skill to have for a pony?
for all we kno their language could be glyphs and runes instead
